William Douglas McArtan, age 93, passed away at his home in Linden, NC on Sunday, February 4, 2024 surrounded by family.
William (AKA Doug) was born on November 26, 1930, in Harnett County to the late James Franklin McArtan and Eva Canady McArtan. In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by by his wife, Myrna Faye Johnson McArtan and first born son William D. McArtan Jr., his brother, Frank McArtan and sisters, Sue Byrd and Helen McDonald.
Doug served in the United States Marine Corps as an aeronautics engineer repairing fighter jets and later served his community as a civil servant and farmer. He enjoyed tinkering with tractors, auto mechanics, completing all kinds of projects around his workshop, animal husbandry, and watching old cowboy movies.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons Michael L. McArtan (Jeanne), Robert A. McArtan, and John K. McArtan (Krista); sisters, Joyce A. Harkey (Bobby) and Shirley J. Willoughby; brother Alvin R. McArtan (Charlotte); and beloved grandchildren Michael Smith, Micah McArtan, and Mercy McArtan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301.
A funeral service to celebrate Doug’s life will be conducted Friday, February 9, 2024 at 10:00 am at the Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home Chapel, followed by burial at Lafayette Memorial Park, 2301 Ramsey St., Fayetteville, NC 28301
There will be a luncheon provided by Flat Branch Covenant Presbyterian Church, 130 Darroch Rd., Bunnlevel, NC 28323, at 2 pm. Please come and gather with family and friends for lunch in honor of Doug McArtan.
