On December 18, 2017, Mrs. Florence Burnett Alvarez passed away surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her late husband LTC (US Army Retired) Alfred "Smilin' Al" Alvarez who passed away in July 2017.
Florence was born in Revere, MA on February 6, 1928. She graduated from Revere High School in 1946 and began work as a telephone operator. She met Alfred in 1948; they were married in 1949 and began a blissful life together of 68 years. As an "Army Wife" she traveled between military duty stations including Japan, Germany, Argentina and numerous Army posts in the U.S. before eventually settling in Fayetteville, NC. They purchased their first home and lived there from 1965 until their passing in 2017.
Their marriage included four children: Michael (CDR USN Ret) married to Catherine, Colleen married to William Wellons, Kevin married to Cynthia, and Sean married to to Amy; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Florence was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first. She was happiest surrounded by the large family gatherings with the kids and all the stories and joking. While sadly missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she and Al are reunited to spend eternity together.
A cremation will be handled by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home and private services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made to the Fayetteville Animal Protections Society.

Hello Alvarez Family,I'm a neighbor living in the area.
Having heard of your most recent loss, I want to leave you a brief post. I too, well know the grief of losing love ones, and that at times like these, it is encouraging just to know that others are thinking about us. Something that has really helped me to cope with such losses, is the wonderful promise of Christ Jesus, recorded for our comfort at John 5:28,29. I hope, that when you are feeling up to it, that you are going to look up these powerful Scriptures, in your copy of The Bible. Also, I hope that this brief note, finds The Family feeling as good as can be expected Today.
With Greatest Sympathy, Your Neighbor : P.D.Walker.

Family of Florence Alvarez,
There are few things more difficult than experiencing the loss of a loved one. It is apparent from the kind expressions that Mrs. Alvarez will be sadly missed. I too have endured such a loss and find comfort in knowing death was not God’s purpose for mankind and his purpose has not changed.
God’s word says 'death is an enemy' and promises it will be 'brought to nothing'. (1Corinthians 15:26) Further, “He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces”. (Isaiah 25:8). So, God guarantees the grief and sorrow we experience is temporary. (Revelation 21:4). It is because of Jehovah God’s purpose and great love for us, that he guarantees the restoration of life.
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life...” ( John 11:25) Jesus not only spoke of the coming resurrection (John 5:21, 28, 29), he himself was resurrected by his Father and performed many miracles including resurrections. All resurrections took place on earth giving us a precious glimpse of what is to come.......seeing our loved ones again! (Acts 24:15)
As you cherish the many fond memories of Mrs. Alvarez, may Jehovah God continue to bless your family during this difficult time and in the days to come......

My deep condolences to the Alvarez family,
I was really touched by the loss of your loved one. When a precious loved one falls asleep in death, it brings to mind God’s precious son Jesus. It is comforting to note how he viewed death. I would like to share it with you from the gift that the Most High God has given to each & everyone of us. His written word the Bible in the Book of John chapter 11 verses 11-14. Please, notice that Jesus viewed death as one Sleeping. He viewed death in such a comforting way.
And, the Most High God promises that we can have the opportunity to see our loved ones again in perfect health (Psalms 83:18, Acts 24:15, & Isaiah 33:24). He even says where: Psalms 37:11 and for how long Psalms 37:29).
I really hope that these promises were as comforting to you as they were to us when our daughter died and also when my precious husband of 50 years fell asleep in death.
Written to you in deep sympathy,
