Command Sergeant Major (retired) Salvatore ‘Sam’ Maiello, 95, of Fayetteville passed away on Sunday, 8 April with his loving family at his side.
Sam was born to the late Joseph Maiello and Angela Serrao Maiello in Ambler, Pennsylvania, on 19 March 1923, one of eight children in the family. He volunteered for the air defense artillery in 1942 and fought in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. While liberating the town of Belfort, France, he met his future wife and love of his life, Irene. After a brief post-war stint in civilian life, Sam re-enlisted in the Army, serving in a variety of countries, to include Germany, Italy, Korea and Ethiopia. In addition to WWII, he participated in the Dominican Republic intervention and the Vietnam War. He retired from active duty in 1974 with the rank of Sergeant Major. He then served as the Pro at the Fort Bragg Stryker Golf Course for twenty years before finally retiring. Even as a retiree, Sam could be found most mornings on a golf course at Ft Bragg, Pope AFB or in Fayetteville. Sergeant Major Maiello was awarded numerous medals to include the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, and last November, he was awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s highest military decoration.
Sam never met a stranger and was known to so many as a loving husband, a devoted family man, a friend, a golfer, and a soldier. To his close family and many others, he was known as PePe. To his family in Pennsylvania he was known as Tootie. To all who had the pleasure of meeting him, he was known as an honest, dependable man who loved life and made those around him do the same.
Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years Irene, his brother Frank, his daughters Priscilla Herrick and her husband Charles, and Patricia O’Brien; five grandchildren, Vanessa Davidson and her husband, Wolfe, Ericka Zumwalt and her husband, Billy, Dustin O’Brien and his fiancé, Jacqueline, Meagan O’Brien, and Michael Herrick and his wife, Anna; his nine great- grandchildren, Samantha Zumwalt, Natalie Zumwalt, Alex Davidson, Katelyn Davidson, Emily Zumwalt, LillyAnn O’Brien, Layla O’Brien, Scarlett O’Brien and Skyler Smith.
Religious services will be held at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church on Friday, 13 April at 12:30pm. Internment will take place at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery on 13 April at 2:00pm. The family will receive guests following the Internment at the residence of Patricia O’Brien to celebrate PePe’s life.

Celebrating the life of Salvatore "Sam" "PePe" Maiello
Thank you for signing Salvatore "Sam" "PePe" Maiello's Guestbook
As I read Mr. Maiello’s obituary, it was apparent he was appreciated by many. The cherished memories they have of him will keep him alive in their minds and hearts helping them to cope with the grief of his death. Reflecting on the wonderful hope given by the Creator will provide the hope of seeing those asleep in death. This teaching of the resurrrection is a fundamental teaching of the Bible that has help many to cope successfully with the death of loved ones. Acts 24:15 says ‘there is going to be a resurrection.’ This means that those asleep in death who are in God’s memory will be restored to life as Jesus was. When that occurs all tears of sadness will become tears of joy as the dead are reunited with their family and friends. This is the promise of One who cannot lie because he has the power to fulfill his promise which is motivated by love, justice, and compassion. Please accept my sincere condolences regarding your recent loss of Mr. Maiello.

Hello Maiello Family, I'm a neighbor living in the area.
Having heard of your most recent loss, I want to leave you a brief post. I too, well know the grief of losing love ones, and that at times like these, it is encouraging just to know that others are thinking about us. Something that has really helped me to cope with such losses, is the wonderful promise of Christ Jesus, recorded for our comfort at John 5 :28,29. I hope, that when you are feeling up to it, that you are going to look up these powerful Scriptures, in your copy of The Bible. Also, I hope that this brief note, finds The Family feeling as good as can be expected Today.
With Greatest Sympathy, Your Neighbor P.D.Walker.
