Gregory James Orme passed away at Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina, on September 25, 2017, at the age of 58.
Gregory was born in Dayton, Ohio, to James and Virginia Orme on January 2, 1959. He was preceded in death by his father, James Orme; mother, Esther Orme; and sister, Marilyn Orme.
Gregory is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 26 years, Gina Orme; son, Cameron Orme; and daughter, Hailey Orme.
Gregory loved to learn and spent most of his adult life furthering his education. After graduation from Kettering High School, Gregory went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati (1983), a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Thomas Edison State College (1994), a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Duke University (1999), a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (2008), and a Certificate in Distance Learning and Administration from East Carolina University (2015). At the time of his passing, Gregory was enrolled in a Master of Science program in Instructional Technology and Doctor of Philosophy program in Technical and Professional Discourse at East Carolina University.
Gregory and his wife Gina were the executive directors of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra in Fayetteville, North Carolina, from 1994 to 2000. Gregory had an exemplary career as a Department of the Army Civilian at Fort Bragg. His last assignment was as the Chief of the Literature Development Division. Greg recently wrote of his duties, “I have the greatest job I could imagine, supporting those who defend our country as I daily use the specialized knowledge I have gained.”
Gregory was honored with the Secretary of the Army Award for Publications Improvements, Achievement Medal for Civilian Service, Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, the Superior Civilian Service Award, and the Fort Bragg Drive for Diversity Award. He received several awards from the American Advertising Federation, Printing Industries of America, and International Association of Webmaster and Designers (Golden Web Awards) for writing and graphic excellence, and he was featured in such notable design publications as Graphic Design: USA and Print’s Regional Design Annual. Gregory was the vice president of the Georgia-Carolina College English Association and was a member of the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching; Pi Alpha Alpha, an academic honor society for students of public administration; and Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honor society. Gregory was named the American Businesswomen’s Association Chapter Business Associate of the Year in 2002.
The visitation will be held at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home, 545 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Sunday, October 1, 2017, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Fayetteville Christian Church, 4308 Rosehill Road, Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Monday, October 2, 2017, at 2:00 PM. Pastor Tom Cooperider will officiate.

I had the pleasure of having Greg in a graduate course that I taught a few years ago and was very much looking forward to working more with him on his dissertation research. I am so very sorry to hear of his passing: he was a smart and kind man. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and close friends at this time.
